Your roof is the first line of defense against outside elements and takes the brunt of storms year-round. It’s important to be sure that your roof is in tip-top shape, but there are a few things you should not do on your roof. Despite the temptation of what appears to be a quick fix, here are a few things you should consider before trying to gain access to your roof.
1) Walk on Your Shingles
Other than avoiding the risk of falling and being injured, walking on your roof can actually cause great damage to the shingles on your rooftop. If you have asphalt shingles, walking on your roof creates friction and can leave the shingles bare or dislodge them completely. If you find yourself in a situation where you must gain access to your roof, be sure you wear shoes that will provide you with reliable traction on the ladder and roof. If you are removing debris from your roof or gutters after a severe storm hits, be sure you are aware of areas that could have trapped moisture that could be slick.
2) Pressure Wash Your Shingles
It’s important to keep your roof free from debris so it does not become lodged in your gutters, but pressure washing your roof to clean or dislodge debris is never a good idea. Overtime, moisture will erode the asphalt off of the shingles. Highly pressurized water will not only add moisture to your roof, but at a rate that will cause great stress to your rooftop. Delivering such direct erosion causing pressure and moisture to your shingles can greatly reduce the lifespan and overall structurally integrity of your roof.
3) Repair a Leak
If you have spotted a leak inside your home, there are a number of causes that could be responsible. Even though it’s important to address a leak before it becomes a larger issue, it can be tempting to get on the roof to take a look for yourself. Not only do you risk injury like we previous discussed, chances are you are not going to be able to address the root issue that has caused the leak in the first place. Leaks can be caused not only by damaged or missing shingles, but also by damaged flashing, clogged gutters or improper sealing.
